Pillows

I've put off 'decorating' our bedroom for the longest time. It's one of those things I always felt like doesn't get a lot of attention so why worry about it? Well I've decided this has to change. After a long day of work, I want to crawl into bed relaxed and inspired, like the rest of our home feels. To start, I thought I would get some miss-matched / matching pillows, to go with our cream bead spread.  I ordered these three little beauties this weekend. I've been eying the West Elm dip-dyed pillow for a while and CANNOT stop looking at Victoria, of SF Girl by Bay's cottage makeover. It's SO perfect. Right up my alley, with all that black/white/neutral. So I had to get the little Swiss cross pillow she shared.

I'm a big fan of these graphics + photo pairings of this shoot, by design group, Beetroot. I'm always drawn to illustration/design paired with fashion and Beetroot really created some beautiful images for Access' Spring/Summer 2011 fashion book.

Spaces // Meg Lewis

This week's Spaces feature comes to us from Web + UI Designer, Meg Lewis of Ghostly Ferns. Meg and the rest of her team at Ghostly Ferns put out some really, really beautiful work. Meg works in a shared studio space (which sounds amazing and has a KILLER view!), take a look!

Tell us about yourself as a creative.

I am a web & UI designer that finds myself doing some branding work as well. I am the owner of Ghostly Ferns, a small design studio based in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. I am perpetually happy and always an optimist. Somehow, those are my best and worst qualities at the same time. I think my personality really shows itself in my work. I only accept clients that are excited and passionate about their products! Exactly why I coined Ghostly Ferns as A web design, branding and illustration studio for happy people.

Describe your creative journey.

While I was in college for design, I knew that I never wanted to work for a company. I always had a dream of designing for clients I chose, setting my own hours and having the freedom to get out and see a movie on a Wednesday afternoon. I knew straight out of school that I was going to start my own design studio. With no experience and a heck of a lot of ambition, I was able to start Ghostly Ferns immediately. It was the kindness and support of the design community that really helped my business off to a running start. Over time I began working with early-stage startups and small businesses alike. Today, after 4 years, about 50% of my work comes from these startups and the other half remains with little online shops and blogs!

Share a little bit about your space.

I work out of a shared studio space called Studiomates. Most of the photos seen are from around the Studiomates office. Working out of a collaborative workspace of designers, illustrators, bloggers, writers and developers is truly the American dream. My individual desk is a little oasis that keeps me inspired. Coming to work everyday is so exciting! Sometimes I have to take a deep breath and remember that I actually have a job. Usually it feels like I'm playing all day. Beer in the fridge, amazing food around the corner, a work-in bartender and barista.

What's your favorite thing about your space?

The view! Nothing beats the insane Manhattan Bridge view of our waterfront property. Nothing is more inspiring than the Manhattan skyline. Nothing!

What's one thing you think every creative needs in their space?

Whatever makes you happy. You should want to go to work and want to start your day. Fill your space with whatever you can to keep you motivated and excited about work. Maybe that's a bunch of Confetti System ornaments like me. Maybe it's some insane taxidermy. Maybe it's just photos of your family. It also doesn't hurt to also fill your space with other people that are insanely talented. I can't recommend a shared workspace enough!

Work Attire

Most of the time when people hear 'working from home', they think, 'oh! wearing your pajama's all day!' -- and maybe some people do! But I feel really uninspired and almost 'blah' if I work in sweats all day. Then I read Megan Gonzalez of Mae Mae Paperie's interview with The Everygirl yesterday, and she's SO right. Megan was talking about how she was inspired after reading Twyla Tharp's, 'The Creative Habit' (which I also highly recommend reading!), she explained... 

"Yes—you are an artist, but it’s a job. You can’t show up in your PJ’s and expect brilliant ideas and vibrant patterns to be in your client’s inbox by the end of the day."

What do you guys wear while your working? Do you feel that on days when you make yourself presentable you work better? I know I do. When you feel confident in yourself, your creative + work process will follow. Or does working in sweats versus working in jeans not make a difference to you? 

I put together a standard outfit you'll usually catch me wearing - jeans, oversized tee + sweater (because of course you want to at least be comfy) and I can't forget my llama necklace from Madewell that I wear everyday (here's a similar giraffe one!).
