Currently: Resources and Tools

Friday, March 16, 2012

It's been a while since I've done a Friday Currently, but this Friday I thought I'd change it up a bit and share some different resources and tools I've been using recently.

(Books)
+ I just ordered The Little Know-It-All: Common Sense for Designers and
Talent Is Not Enough: Business Secrets for Designers

(Color)
+ Colllor.com - Choose a color and it matches similar hues, tints, shades, mixes as well as simliar colors.
+ Kuler.adobe.com - Perfect for finding pre-made color combinations (especially great if your having a hard time finding that just right combo). You can also create your own combinations and save them to your Adobe account (which you should have if you've registered your Creative Suite).

(Apps)
+ HoursTracker - I've got this app on my phone - I can clock in and out and accurately track my hours. It's helpful because it keeps track of the hours and you can email or back-up to the cloud to save the data. I use it for both flat rate projects, hourly projects, personal projects, etc. That way I can effectively look back on what I've spent my time on.
+ TurboScan - This iPhone app is pretty surprising - it scans documents (or sketches) and actually works pretty great! You "scan" the document by taking a photo of it 3 times and emailing it.
+ Sparrow (lite) - I haven't upgraded this app just yet - although I'm planning on it. I'm loving this mail app. I use to use the Apple Mail app that came on the computer but Sparrow has a much better UI and it looks a lot like the Twitter app. Plus I'm loving that I can color code my folders! The lite version has ads and a "sent with sparrow" blurb at the bottom of the email. It's a great thing to try out before purchasing the $9.99 app. I may even have to get it for my phone!
+ Clear - This little colorful To Do iPhone app is more for the looks really. It's great for when I'm away from my work and I can think about the things I need to do - it calms my stress to jot everything down.

(Downloads)
+ Font Squirrel - great array of handpicked free font downloads.
+ Lost Type - another great site for fonts - but these fonts are made especially for Lost Type.
+ Lost and Taken - a lot of free high-res textures for download.
+ You Work for Them - lots and lots of fonts, vectors, images, videos and brushes for purchase.

I'll try to come up with some more of my favorite resources and tools and share them more. Do you have your go to resources? Have you used these resources and tools? What do you think of them?
