Something New

For a while now, I've been on a kick to spend time learning calligraphy or mostly how to use a quill. I spent sometime this weekend playing around and practicing. Mostly writing lines from Parks and Rec because it was playing in the background! And I'm loving it. As you can see it's still not perfect. The biggest problem I'm having, which I think effects the smoothness of the letterforms is keeping ink in my nib. I'm constantly having to refill, sometimes I can't even finish a word.

To all the calligraphy pros out there, what am I doing wrong?

Yay for learning calligraphy. Yes, some lines could be smoother but remember that practice makes perfect. You are doing great.

i'm having the same problem... i can't keep ink in my nib long enough to get a consistent flow and grow comfortable with my writing style.

have you seen melissa esplin's site, melissaesplin.com? i took a a calligraphy class from her, and she teaches online courses as well, but i'll chalk it up to not enough practice... which also equates to not enough confidence!

we can do it!

I have the same problem, so I've been thinking about getting a pen like this. Maybe it'll help for you too?

I've been thinking about learning calligraphy for few months. Even my bf's mum gave me a little kit for xmas 2011. I tried so many times, and I always failed. Now I'm thinking about some workshop, cuz actually I really want to see how professionals work. The other thing is that probably I don't practise enough...
Your calligraphy looks good btw:)

I love it, Eva!! You'll get more awesome with practice, it'll come. Besides, any little quirks that may be there are totally overlooked by how cute your type layout and phrasing is! I like how they kind of sit on curved baselines and everything is grouped together so nicely. Keep going!

I really like your calligraphy so far! Like everything worthwhile, it takes time. I recently just bought a calligraphy pen and was really disappointed...I think I just need to start learning how to use a quill.

You need to play a bit with the viscosity of the ink. Maybe make it a bit thicker by adding a bit of black gouache.
